How to Stop Data Recovery Theft from Mobile Device

Planning to sell your old device for money or exchange to buy something new of its variant, then before you get on with it make sure you sell only the device, not your identity? Ever since the events, audits, and information began to capture and handle in digital forms like files and media, preventing our privacy turned difficult due to data theft.

And this data theft happens mostly from mobile devices due to its wide usage and mobility, so obliterate the data permanently because compromising mobile information could deteriorate your status than the theft of the device itself.

Caution:
  • Before proceeding with any of the appropriate methods below take a backup by moving the necessary Files/Photos and Videos from your device to a safe medium.
  • And also ensure if all the required data were collected from the device to be sold.

Method 1:  Encrypt and Factory Reset to Prevent Data Recovery
Most of the devices launched recently in the markets worldwide do have this facility called encryption which conceals the files, photos, and videos contained in the device by encoding it into a different form to prevent unauthorized access.

In some devices like the iPhone and the latest release of Android devices this facility is enabled by default, so just formatting the device will delete the data completely without leaving any traces to retrieve the data. However, in other operating systems like android, we may have to enable and do the activity manually to prevent the data from recovering back after the factory reset.
  • Step 1: Go to Settings in your phone -> Security & Credentials ->Find the Encrypt Option then tap on encrypt option to enable the option.
    • Note: Depending on the size of data encryption may take some time, wait till it completes.
    • Encryption options will be clubbed under different navigation and named slightly different in other brand's devices.
  • Step 3:  Once the encryption process is complete then Go to Settings in your phone -> Find About Phone - > Reset - > Factory data reset and tap on reset.
  • Step 4: After the reset process is completed the data will be wiped out permanently from the device.

Method 2: Delete and Overwrite the Personal Data with Dummy Data
Are you okay to compromise and disclose your mobile privacy to someone? If not, then you can use this second method if your device lags the encryption option or also as an additional mechanism to ensure if the data wiped out completely or not.
  • Step 1: Go to Settings in your phone -> Find About Phone - > Reset - > Factory data reset and tap on reset.
    • Note: The factory reset option will not just wipe the data it reset the settings, delete the accounts logged and revoke version of the device to default, etc.
  • Step 2: It will take time to wipe the data, once the wiping is complete it will restart the device.
  • Step 3: Now load dummy files, photos, and videos either by capturing through the mobile camera of the device or by connecting the mobile to the computer and load the dummy data by drag drops files in bulk. Fill the phone with as much junk dummy data as you can.
  • Step 4: Now delete the files which were loaded and then repeat STEP 3 again and do the factory reset.
  • Step 5: And you're good to go for sale or re-use without fear of deleted data being recovered.

How to Format Write Protected USB Disk Drive and SD Card

The main intention to append the write protection switches in USB flash drives and SD cards is to prevent accidental file deletion and to avoid suspicious files such as malware/trojan etc. from unauthorized sources delivering/storing into the USB disk. If the USB disk is in read-only mode, any attempts to create (or) edit file into the USB disk will be denied, But when you really want to make changes in the USB disk to add some more information (or) to edit the information that is already present in it, the restriction that you added on your computer initially will now prevent you from making changes such as adding new files or deleting existing files from any USB disk drive plugged into it. However, you can still read the files available in it, but you'll not be allowed to make changes and format the disk.
